BIRTH OF THE COOL

Born 100 years ago, trumpeter, composer, and producer Miles Davis is still one of the most important icons of modern music: he has repeatedly fundamentally renewed music, from cool jazz to today’s fusion genres.

At a formal dinner at the White House in Washington D.C., a Republican representative asked Miles Davis why he had been invited to the event. Davis replied: “I changed music about five or six times. What did you do for an invite, besides being a white guy?”

Although he is revered as the king of jazz, during his career he often played with pop and rock stars of his time, from Jimi Hendrix to Carlos Santana and Prince. He even covered hits by Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper. His legacy lives on today: his album Kind of Blue is still the world’s best-selling jazz album, inspiring musicians across styles from hip-hop to electronic music.

HOW WOULD DAVIS SOUND TODAY?

A music-themed hotel that also houses the High Note SkyBar, Aria Hotel Budapest has 49 rooms dedicated to musical legends. One of the greatest figures in jazz, Miles Davis must have been included in this list, so our dedicated room 510 evokes the spirit of his art with subtle references and characterful design.

The room inspired and provided the setting for a short concert by the Subtones band: the group of young musicians plays with the idea of how Davis would sound if he were alive today and rewrite the rules of the game again.

Listen to the Subtones band concert, straight from Aria Hotel’s room 510.
